Blues secured their first PDL win of the season at Hillsborough.

But it wasn't a performance that earned favour with Steve Spooner.

Blues trailed 1-0 at the break, the Owls scoring via David Penney's free-kick.

Then came back to stun their hosts with goals at the end, through a Miguel Fernandez stunner (90 minutes) and Kane Thompson-Sommers (90+3 minutes).

After a 1-1 draw at Coventry City and a crazy 5-4 home defeat by Crewe Alexandra it was a welcome three points.

But that was about it for Spooner, Blues Senior Professional Development Coach.

"It was three points but a three points I felt we didn't really merit," he admitted. "We just never got going. The warm-up was lackadaisical, then the ball work, and we took that into the game.

"I can't really put any positive spin on it because that would be wrong; we have got to perform a lot better than that."

Fernandez levelled matters up for Blues with a superb strike. Taking he ball wide on the right touchline, he cut inside to the angle of the area and hoisted a left-footer that sailed beyond the 'keeper and into the far top corner.

Then not long after, right at the death, Blues broke from halfway, with Thompson-Sommers laying the ball off to Jayden Reid, on the left.

Thompson-Sommers continued his run down the channel and Reid slipped him through; the midfielder beat the last defender after veering into the box with some nifty footwork before slotting past the 'keeper from a tight angle.

Reid could have given Blues a great start early on when he was played clear, but his attempt smacked back off the post.

And it was pretty much Sheffield pressure that Blues had to content with from there on, with Adan George being denied due to a fine block by the 'keeper as the contest ticked into the final 10 minutes.

Sheffield were then made to pay for failure to add to their opener as Fernandez and Thompson-Sommers dished out the smash and grab.

Blues: Jeacock, Williams, Roberts, Gordon, Redmond, Walker, Thompson-Sommers, Soldevila (Andrews 65), Hurst (George ht), Bailey (Fernandez 75), Reid. Not used: Rouse, Campbell.
