Jayden Reid - assisted by Kyle Hurst - had put Blues ahead in the second-half, before goals from Louis Britton and Sam Pearson saw the hosts run out winners.
Steve Spooner's side were looking to build on recent wins over Millwall and Queens Park Rangers but came unstuck against the Robins at the Optima Stadium.
And the Under-23s Head Coach, although disappointed with the outcome, could not fault the application of his players in Weston-super-Mare.
Speaking to BCFC.com, Spooner explained: "The players have certainly given their all. It wasn't a case of being poor. There wasn't much in it and that is summed up by there just being one goal in it.
"It was going to be who converted their chance that was going to decide it.
"It was a good game with two teams who are both doing very well at the moment, it was always going to be the odd goal that separated us. We were better in the first-half and then after the break, they went with a fuller press and it disrupted us. That said we created some opportunities and hit the post as well."
Blues' goal which put them ahead five minutes into the second-half came through Reid, with Spooner highlighting this and the inclusion of multiple Under-18s in his squad as positives from the afternoon.
He said: "It was good build-up, Kyle Hurst did well, cut it back and Jayden finished it well. We got around the back a few times but maybe didn't create enough opportunities.
"We had three Under-18s starting and they covered themselves very well. They put in really good performances. We brought another one on, just to try and wrestle some control back from them. We changed the shape, went to 4-4-2 to cause them problems and stem their flow down the sides. It was good to get them starting."
The Head Coach concluded his post-match thoughts by looking ahead to upcoming games versus Charlton Athletic and Crewe Alexandra.
He said: "We have two games next week and we have to get back at it. It's not really about addressing the issues as it was a very close game."
